West of Loathing – Shop Upgrades Guide

Introduction

This is a guide to what items can be unlocked by adding shops to Dirtwater. At the start of the game, there are six empty lots at the east end of Dirtwater, and you can convince various NPCs to open up shops there. Whenever a new shop opens up, the shop to its left adds a new item to its stock based on who moved in. This means that the last shop you add will never get an upgrade, and the first shop you add will never upgrade any other shops. Hopefully, with this guide, you can stress less over what order to build the shops in.

Shops And Where To Find Them

Hot Dogs – Find Doug in Cavern Canyon inside of the Kitchen. Promise not to steal his idea and then let him know about Dirtwater.

Grady’s Fine Leather Goods – Grady can be found in Danny’s Tannery. Fight your way to the very back of the area, and you’ll find him hiding behind a lye barrel.

Murray’s Curiosity & Bean – Murray is spazzing out inside of Lost Dutch Oven Mine. Make your way into the El Vibrato area at the bottom of the mine, making sure to avoid the props on the bottom floor, and you’ll find an El Vibrato Headband. Interact with it in your inventory to figure out what it does, and then put it on Murray and tell him about Dirtwater. He’ll give you the headband back when you first visit his shop.

Liquid Bread Brewing Co – Help the mayor of Breadwood with his stolen yeast, and he’ll send you to Ol’ Schmalz Brewery. Defeat/out moxie the yeast monster and then talk to the guy on the right to get him to open a brewery in Dirtwater.

Tony’s – Tony is in Fort of Darkness getting high. Get some toy guns from Fort Memoriam by beating all the battles there and give them to Tony so his elves can defend themselves on the way to Dirtwater.

Books – Alexandria was killed in an artillery attack. Get the Chrono Key from Curious False Mountain and then go to Alexandria Ranch to open a time portal. Pull her through the portal to save her life and tell her about Dirtwater.

Hot Dog

By default, Doug sells the Elegant Hot Dog, the Jumbo Dog, and the Saucy Dog.

-If Murray’s Curiosity & Bean opens to the right, Doug starts selling Hovering Dogs.

-If Tony’s opens to the right, Doug sells Bootleather Dogs.

-If Grady’s Fine Leather Goods opens to the right, Doug sells Leathery Dogs.

-If Books opens to the right, Doug sells Literary Hot Dogs.

-If Liquid Bread Brewing Co opens to the right, Doug sells Beer-battered Hot Dogs.

Murray’s Curiosity & Bean

When Murray first opens his store, he sells All-Purpose Beans, a Glass Sphere, a Golden Scarab Pin, a Magician’s Pants, and a Ring of Inconspicuousness. Unlike the other shops, most of the items Murray sells are one-of-a-kind.

Saved games that unlocked Murray’s Curiosity & Bean before the v1.02 patch will not have All-Purpose Beans for sale.

-If Books moves to the right, Murray sells a Disturbing Portrait. The portrait can be put up in your room and will give you the Picture of You buff when you sleep.

-If Tony moves into the right, Murray sells a Teeny-Tiny Hat.

-If Hot Dog moves into the right, Murray sells a Meat-Stained Ring.

-If Liquid Bread Brewing Co moves to the right, Murray sells an Elaborate Puzzle Box. If your Mysticality is high enough, the box can be solved for 1000 XP.

-If Grady’s Fine Leather Goods moves into the right, Murray sells a single Glimmering Thread.

Liquid Bread Brewing Co

When the shop first opens, it only sells Athletic Amber, Brainy Brown, and Cool Kolsch.

-If Hot Dogs moves into the right, they start selling Mercurial Marzen.

-If Tony’s moves into the right, they start selling Pronto Pilsner.

-If Books moves to the right, they start selling Erudite Eisbock.

-If Murray’s Curiosity & Bean moves into the right, they start selling Strange Saison instead of Cool Kolsch. (bug?)

-If Grady’s Fine Leather Goods opens to the right, they start selling Leathery Lager.

Tony’s

When Tony and his “elves” first open the shoe store, they sell Boot Polish, Tony’s Shiny Boots, Tony’s Shootin’ Boots, and Tony’s Tiger-Striped Boots.

-If Books opens to the right, Tony starts selling Tony’s Inscribed Boots.

-If Hot Dog opens to the right, Tony starts selling Tony’s Meaty Boots instead of Tony’s Shootin’ Boots (bug?).

-If Liquid Bread Brewing Co opens to the right, Tony starts selling Tony’s Beer-Soaked Boots instead of Tony’s Shootin’ Boots (bug?).

-If Murray’s Curiosity & Bean opens to the right, Tony starts selling Tony’s Enchanted Boots instead of Tony’s Shootin’ Boots (bug?).

-If Grady’s Fine Leather Goods opens to the right, Tony starts selling Tony’s Thick-Soled Boots.

Books

When Alexandria first opens the book store, she sells copies of most of the skill books in the game in case you missed them as well as a copy of your class’s magazine.

-If Murray’s Curiosity & Bean moves to the right, Alexandria sells a copy of Forgotten Lore, which teaches the Remembered Lore skill (1/1 ranks) when read.

-If Hot Dog moves into the right, Alexandria sells a copy of To Serve Food To Mankind, which teaches the To Serve Mankind perk.

-If Grady’s Fine Leather Goods moves to the right, Alexandria sells a copy of Tanning and Tanning, which teaches the Year-Round Tan perk.

-If Liquid Bread Brewing Co moves to the right, Alexandria sells a copy of The Quick and the Drunk, which teaches the Quick / Drunk perk.

-If Tony’s moves to the right, Alexandria sells a copy of Kickin’♥♥♥♥♥and Chewin’ Gum instead of Percussive Maintenance (bug?). It teaches the Out Of Gum perk.
